Tokyo Auto Salon: Track-themed Mitsubishi Triton debuts

Lowered work ute to star alongside overlanding Outlander SUV and Delica MPV

Mitsubishi has detailed its line-up for the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon ahead of the show’s opening on January 10, with a total of eight vehicles to be displayed, including three customised Triton utes.

The headline act is the slammed 2025 Mitsubishi Triton customised by Hiromi – a Japanese musician and Mitsubishi brand ambassador.

Where most utes are lifted and fitted with volume-rich off-road tyres, Hiromi’s Triton goes to the other way and sits closer to the ground than most SUVs while rolling on enlarged six-spoke alloys shod with low-profile rubber.

Other enhancements include a large front splitter, side skirts, a sport bar, wheelarch extensions, unique decals and a new rear bumper insert.

The second Triton built for the show was designed in partnership with Red Bull Japan and was created to support the energy drink maker’s sponsored dance music events.

That perhaps explains why instead of being used to dish out cans of pop, the cargo bed has been transformed into a DJ booth for impromptu sets wherever the vehicle travels.

The third Triton is the actual T1 spec 2024 rally car used to compete in cross-country rallies. Improving handling the competition-spec ute sports neat modification that include a four-link coil spring independent rear suspension instead of the standard ute’s leaf springs.

Sticking with the off-road theme, the 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Night Seeker Concept will be the only medium SUV on display in Tokyo and shows off the triple-diamond brand’s vision for a more capable family bus.

Designed with help from the creators of the Metal Gear Solid video game series, the all-terrain Outlander gets a black-ops military style look that includes a new transparent visor to protect the grille and headlamps, plus more underbody armour, dual recovery points and extra LEDs.

A matte finish for the custom roof rack and Metal Gear Solid graphics, plus new wheel covers complete the look.

It’s thought the standard car’s 222kW – as per the recent facelift, pending for Australia – 2.4-litre plug-in hybrid powertrain carries over unchanged.

Next up is a tougher take on the Delica van, with the D:5 Black Edition Active Seeker concept getting more protective gear, off-road wheels, all-terrain tyres and a roof tent for camping.

A further Delica D:5 support car with a high lift-kit, extra body armour and off-road wheels and tyres, plus a Ralliart livery will also be shown, alongside an impossibly cute Delica Mini support car.
