The first image of the pure-electric Mazda MX-30 SUV has been leaked overnight, revealing it will have radically different styling compared to the car-maker's current line-up.
The single image, posted by numerous Japanese car sites, shows the small SUV being recharged and is thought to be a promotional shot that will be used as part of its world debut at the Tokyo motor show opening tomorrow, ahead of the MX-30's launch in Europe in 2020.
Instead of focusing on long-distance range, early indications suggest the MX-30 will have be powered by a relatively modest 35.5kWh battery that will provide for a range of 200-250km between recharges.
Driven by a single electric motor that produces 103kW and 265Nm of torque, it's thought the battery-powered SUV will hit 100km/h in around nine seconds and top out at around 170km/h.
Look closer at our first glimpse of the Mazda MX-30 and you'll also see the sporty electric SUV will revive the RX-8's rear-hinged 'Freestyle' doors that feature a hidden door latch inside for more rakish coupe profile.
Linking it with the original 2003 Mazda coupe, the MX-30 is set to be offered with a rotary range extender engine – the first time a small Wankel-derived engine has been used in one of the car-maker's products since the RX-8.
Stay tuned, because you'll only have to wait a few more hours for the full details.
Mazda is also due to reveal an upgraded MX-5 at the Tokyo show.
