Painful family car journeys will be a thing of the past when you use our tried and tested kids’ podcast guide. In fact, they’ll want to stay in the car until the episode finishes.
Over the last nine years as a mum of two, family car journalist and founder of BabyDrive.com.au I have listened to hundreds of kids’ podcasts with my family.
Here are my top 10 podcasts for kids to listen to in the car…
This is our family’s (and our friends’) all-time favourite podcast. It’s great for kids of all ages by being crazy and silly. I have never had one of my kids or their friends not love listening to this independent Australian podcast.
Created by Melbourne dad Samuel Ramsden, Silly Stories for Kids takes all ages on crazy adventures with loveable characters Pim Pim, Teddy Winkle, the Chimp Brothers, Thingy Whopper, Tiger Pow and Fizzy Wizzler to name a few.
This will have your kids’ ears pricked and their bottoms glued to their seats. However, whatever you do, don’t say “Crazy!”
The Wild immerses young and old listeners in stories of the natural world.
Created by award-winning ecologist and conservationist Chris Morgan, the mission is to reconnect people with nature so they want to protect it. He does this so well with each podcast as he visits and speaks with local researchers or specialists about specific animals or locations.
Each episode engages people young and old in the fascinating and funny wonders of our wild planet.
This is a funny podcast with Dog Detective Snoop sent from London to Bark Street, in Pflugerville, to train Junior Agent Sniffy. The cheeky duo solves mysteries and cases each episode with the help of their friends Duck, Poor the Groundhog and Fred the Squirrel.
If your kids are dog and animal crazy this is a fantastic podcast choice. Combined with humour, it’s also excellent for families who are good at solving mysteries.
If you want a silent drive, then Bust or Trust is not for you – it will get your family talking and debating.
Essentially, it’s a playful, historic mystery-solving podcast that looks at different theories for unsolved world mysteries from Big Foot to the Lost City of Atlantis.
The presenters “Myth Truster” Tiernan Douieb and “Myth Buster” Athena Kugblenu talk you through each case, then it’s up to everyone listening to decide if you bust the myth or trust it.
Stories Podcast performs a classic story or retells a fairytale in each episode. The melodic tone of the storytelling is good for long journeys, daily transition drives and bedtime by keeping your kids engaged, but calm.
If your children love being read to then this is a great podcast for your young passengers. My four-year-old loves Let’s Read with Lyla and Dad as they read a story book together each episode, often a popular story your little one is likely to already know.
Little Stories for Tiny People podcast is great for young kids. Created and performed by lifelong daydreamer Rhea Pechter, it features original stories our whole family love, filled with endearing characters and inventive plots. The stories are great for sparking your child’s imagination.
A live creative podcast of adaptive folk tales performed by parents of young children and musicians, each episode features the performance of a wholesome story with lessons of kindness and generosity and ends with an activity for your kids to do.
This is a hilarious story podcast for kids. Its silly and original stories are unapologetically weird and creative, capturing my family’s sense of humour. This one has our kids snorting with laughter.
Compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the ABC Kids Listen app is another go-to for a few great podcasts on the road. Our family favourites are:
