Toyota Australia has revealed more details of what will be the Tarago’s upmarket replacement.
The Toyota Granvia will arrive in Aussie showrooms by the end of the year, available in two variants (standard and flagship VX) and offered with six- or eight-seat configurations.
Using the same platform as the new HiAce van, the Granvia will become Toyota’s sole people-mover once the Toyota Tarago is discontinued at the end of 2019 - albeit at a much higher price point.
Toyota Safety Sense driver assistance technologies will be fitted to both variants and include features such as autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection, active cruise control, lane departure warning, adaptive high beam, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, traffic sign assist, reverse camera and nine airbags.
Both variants will be fitted with individual reclining captain’s chairs with armrests, and eight-seater models will utilise an extra 60:40 split two-seater bench as the final row.
Top-spec VX variants receive quilted leather-appointed seats with an electrically adjustable backrest and fold out leg-rest for the second row of seating in eight-seater versions and all four rear seat in the six-seaters.
Front and rear climate control, dual sliding doors (power-operated on VX), smartphone mirroring and push button start feature across all variants.
Powertrain details and pricing are yet to be confirmed, but we’d speculate the Granvia will be powered by a 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine paired to a six-speed automatic, as found in the 2019 HiAce.
Toyota Australia spokesman Sean Hanley is confident the new Granvia will “change the perception of what premium stands for in the people mover market”, saying it will appeal to high-end family, hospitality and corporate buyers.
“It provides an almost limousine-like degree of cabin comfort and refinement for passengers with large captain’s chairs, independent rear climate control and six rear USB ports to keep devices fully charged for business or entertainment,” he said.
Toyota Australia will release specific pricing information closer to the Granvia’s local launch at year’s end.
