Toyota has announced that its compact C-HR hybrid SUV concept and the Lexus RC and RC F coupes will race at the Nurburgring 24 Hour in a bid to accelerate its development of road cars.
It’s not known what will power the C-HR Racing during the famous endurance race, but the presence of an SUV in the annual sports car race will make history as no crossover has ever competed in the German 24-hour endurance race since it was founded back in 1970.
Capitalising on its hybrid knowhow, the C-HR could come equipped with the concept’s petrol electric powertrain - but with a significant lift in power - evidenced by its substantial aero upgrades. The C-HR racer is also expected to come with sequential gearbox for durability purposes.
Campaigned by the Toyota’s GAZOO Racing race team, the C-HR Racing will line-up alongside a heavily prepared Lexus RC and RC R coupes.
Toyota claims its involvement in the endurance race will help it build more durable road cars.
The C-HR SUV has already been green lit for production and the new C-HR Racing is expected to be unveiled, alongside a closer-to-production C-HR road car, at the Geneva motor show in March.
It will race at the N24 on May 28-29.
