Toyota Corolla entry price beyond $25K

Manual gearbox dropped, which pushes up price of entry to Toyota’s top-selling small car by $1500

The entry point to Australia’s top-selling small car, the 2021 Toyota Corolla, has increased by $1500 with the deletion of the manual gearbox option on the Ascent Sport base model grade.

This sees the automatic CVT-equipped Ascent Sport petrol sedan and hatch now opening proceedings at an unchanged $25,395 plus on-road costs, with the hybrid version still requiring a further $2000 outlay.

There are no specification changes to the regular petrol models across the Corolla range, however hybrid-powered sedan variants now have 16-inch alloy wheels fitted standard (up from 15-inch steel rims).

The running change to the Corolla line-up now means every variant uses a continuously variable transmission (CVT), no matter whether power comes from the regular petrol engine or the more efficient petrol-electric hybrid.

The naturally-aspirated 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine continues to produce 125kW of power and 200Nm of torque, while the 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol-electric hybrid produces 90kW/142Nm.

Every Corolla is front-wheel drive.

Standard carryover safety and driver assistance features fitted on the 2021 Toyota Corolla includes autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian and daytime cyclist detection, lane trace assist, brake assist, adaptive cruise control and speed sign recognition.

The Toyota Corolla still holds on to the mantle of the world’s most popular model, with the latest tweak to the Aussie line-up coming shortly after the Japanese auto giant announced that it had sold more than 50 million Corollas worldwide since the first one hit its home market in 1966.

According to Toyota, the Corolla is today sold in more than 150 countries at the rate of approximately one every 28 seconds over the past year. It’s also produced at 12 factories across the world.

In Australia, more than 1.5 million examples of the Corolla have been sold since it first went on sale here in 1967.
