Toyota has announced the Corolla hatch will be available with a new pack comprising pre-collision safety system, forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure alert and automatic high beam.
For most models the new pack is a $750 option, but the Corolla ZR is fitted with the advanced safety suite as standard.
This change aligns the hatch specification with that of the Corolla sedan, which has already rolled out the new technology.
The pre-collision system employs LiDAR and camera to detect obstacles ahead and measure the distance to impact. After the system has actuated audio/visual warnings for the driver, the autonomous emergency braking system reduces the vehicle's speed.
Lane Departure Alert can be enabled by a button on the steering wheel and uses the same camera/LiDAR combo to let the driver know the car is drifting out of the lane. The same technology supports the automatic high-beam facility, which dips the lights at the first sign of an oncoming car.
The new option pack keeps Toyota's small car relevant and up to date in 2017, the 50th anniversary of the Corolla badge in Australia.
