Toyota has updated its Corolla sedan. Ostensively to celebrate the nameplate’s 50th Anniversary, the update is in fact the midlife facelift for the compact four-door.
Styling changes include a new front fascia and the rear-end has been tweaked. Inside the dash and instrument panel have been reworked.
The key equipment change is the availability of autonomous emergency braking (AEB) across the Corolla sedan range.
Incorporated as part of a pre-collision system warning and response system, AEB is also joined by lane-departure alert and automatic high-beam. The kit is standard on the top-of-the-range ZR variant and optional on the SX ($750) and Ascent ($1500).
The option price for Ascent also includes 10-spoke 15-inch alloy wheels.
The SX also adds satellite-navigation in the makeover, while the ZR moves to 'bi-LED' headlights. The Ascent now features touch-screen audio system.
Toyota says it has made “running improvements to the Corolla sedan’s 103kW/173Nm engine, the Multidrive S continuously variable transmission (CVT) and the suspension set-up”.
The changes appear to include a revised throttle/CVT map and Toyota claims shifting is crisper. New larger diameter dampers are now used and changes have been made to suspension bushes and the like to improve ride and handling compromises.
The Ascent sedan’s price has risen by $500, the SX's by $830 and the range-topping ZR's by $930 (see prices below). On the Ascent and SX, the CVT auto remains a $2250 option.
2017 Toyota Corolla sedan pricing (plus ORCs):
Ascent (manual/auto) — $21,240/23,490
SX (manual/auto) — $23,820/26,070
ZR (auto) — $31,920
