The highly anticipated Toyota GR Corolla has been teased yet again by Toyota USA’s social media boffins, however, this is the first time we’ve been given a glimpse of the inbound hot hatch minus the elaborate camo wrap.
This time Toyota opted to blur the vast majority of an image showing the GR Corolla undisguised, clearly showing only the car’s rear window and a tiny snippet of the rear bumper before instructing its Instagram followers to try and guess which vehicle was being shown.
Through the blurring, we can spot the unmistakeable rear silhouette of the current generation Toyota Corolla and while details are hard to make out specifically, a set of black alloy wheels can also be seen contrasting against the white body.
It’s nothing new for a mainstream hatch to have darkened or even two-tone wheels, but in this instance they’re complimented by black window surrounds and a black shark-fin antenna.
Brighten the screen up a bit and you’ll see a silver hue emulating from the centre of the wheels (brake rotors), hinting at a multi-spoke wheel design similar to that of the smaller Toyota GR Yaris.
Looking down at the bottom corner, we can just make out the lines of an aggressive diffuser or winglets at the very least, among which seems to be a chrome exhaust outlet – again similar to that of the Yaris.
Few details have been officially confirmed about Toyota’s first GR Corolla, but it is widely expected to pack the same turbocharged 1.6-litre three-cylinder petrol engine and six-speed manual-only combination as the GR Yaris, as well as the same all-wheel drive system.
At this stage it’s unclear whether the hottest Corolla to date will also be available with an automatic transmission, as the new Honda Civic Type reportedly will be.
, however, the hot turbo-triple could have its performance wick dialled up from 200kW/370Nm to a BMW M135i-scaring 221kW/370Nm courtesy of an upgraded exhaust system and matching ECU tune. This isn’t the first time a circa-220kW power output has been speculated; back in April last year Carsenser floated the possibility of a similar peak power figure.
As with Australia’s Rallye version of the GR Yaris, Torsen limited-slip differentials are also tipped to feature front and rear, in tandem with the adjustable all-wheel-drive system.
Accompanying the Best Car Web report was a fresh render of the fire-breathing hatch featuring the GR Yaris’ signature flared hip line, gaping square front bumper, bold air-dams and even a concave bonnet intake similar to the one fitted to the ST205 Celica GT4.
Toyota Australia has had its hand up for the GR Corolla for a while now but we’re unlikely to see it until at least next year, given the finished product reportedly won’t hit the Japanese market until the middle of this year.
