Toyota GR Corolla three-door, sedan and wagon imagined
Graphic designer serves up some mouth-watering GR Corolla renders, two of which we wish were on Toyota’s radarJust like the giant-killing Toyota GR Yaris three-door, the upcoming 2022 Toyota GR Corolla is only being offered in one body style, but that hasn’t stopped the internet’s graphic designers imagining what the new-age five-door hot hatch might look like dressed in other body styles.
X-Tomi Design has posted three separate renders of exactly that; a three-door GR Corolla hatch, a five-door GR Corolla ‘Touring’ wagon and even a GR Corolla sedan.
Posted on Saturday, Sunday and Monday respectively, the fresh renders have yielded mixed results from the page’s fan base, with some wishfully asking why Toyota hasn’t or won’t make them a reality while others have drawn parallels with existing models from other brands.
Perhaps not unsurprisingly, it’s the wagon that’s garnered the most support, while the sedan has so far just edged out the three-door as the next most popular.
To our eyes at least, the three-door looks the most convincing, but that could just be because we’re familiar with the GR Yaris – the only current three-door Yaris to be offered by Toyota Australia.
Even so, it’s definitely the GR Corolla wagon and sedan that prove the most tantalising prospects; the load-lugger would give Toyota a genuine rival to the popular Skoda Octavia RS wagon and macho Volkswagen Golf R wagon, while the sedan could hypothetically serve as the spiritual replacement for the axed Subaru WRX STI.
The chances of either version seeing the light of day are admittedly slim, but both could ultimately materialise given the mainstream Corolla is already offered as a sedan here and a wagon overseas.
A three-door version of the Toyota GR Corolla hatch is definitely the least likely of the trio since there’s no such thing as a three-door Corolla, but also because of the inevitable cannibalisation that would occur between it and the GR Yaris, which donates its piping-hot 200kW 1.6-litre turbo-triple all-wheel drive powertrain to its bigger brother.
That said, Toyota Australia stopped taking orders for the limited-edition GR Yaris, including Australia’s Rallye version, in June 2021 because demand outstripped supply, and Aussies won’t have access to the hotter Yaris GRMN.
