Toyota previewed its all-new GR Super Sport hypercar at last weekend's Le Mans 24 Hour endurance race, taking to the track before the race started.
Driven by former F1 racer Alex Wurz, the Toyota GR Super Sport wore the familiar Gazoo Racing camouflage that's been sported by other high-profile prototypes, including the recent Toyota GR Yaris that launches in Australia in November.
First shown as a concept back in 2018, the new Toyota GR Super Sport has been designed to compete in the new Le Mans Hypercar class that kicks off next year.
Previewed the same weekend rival Peugeot chose to show off its challenger for the 2022 season, the Toyota has an all-wheel drive layout and an advanced hybrid powertrain that uses a 200kW electric motor to drive the front axle.
Total power is capped at just 500kW, while the new hypercar rules demand a minimum weight of 1100kg.
Originally, Toyota said the GR Super Sport would come with a 735kW twin-turbocharged V6 hybrid powertrain, but that powertrain was conceived before the hypercar series power was capped to 500kW.
It's not known if Toyota will de-tune its powerful V6 hybrid or start again from scratch.
As well as French rival Peugeot, Toyota will battle US brand Glickenhaus and Austrian sports car team ByKolles in the new budget-capped race series that limits the annual spend to €20 million ($A33m).
According to strict FIA rules, Toyota must also create 25 road-legal hypercars that feature the racecar's advanced hybrid powertrain.
