The fourth-generation Toyota Kluger has capped off its launch with a five-star ANCAP rating.
The maximum rating applies to all 2021 Toyota Kluger variants, whether powered by the new 2.5-litre petrol-electric hybrid powertrain or the 3.5-litre V6. All vehicles used in testing were hybrids.
Tested to the latest 2020-2022 protocols at facilities in Sydney, Adelaide and regional NSW, the new seven-seat large SUV scored high marks in all key areas of assessment.
These included 90 per cent for adult protection, 88 per cent for child protection, 76 per cent for vulnerable road user protection and 82 per cent for safety assist, which evaluates the presence and effectiveness of driver assist tech such as autonomous emergency braking (AEB).
The Kluger did well compared to other large SUVs tested recently by ANCAP, cumulatively outscoring its direct rival the Kia Sorento, as well as the Land Rover Defender and the luxury Genesis GV80. All of these vehicles also carry a five-star rating overall.
ANCAP highlighted the performance of the Kluger’s standard AEB Junction Assist, which “impressed” with its ability to avoid collisions with other vehicles when turning across their path.
High levels of performance were also recorded avoiding collisions with pedestrians in scenarios where the Kluger turned into their path when they crossed the road from left or right.
“This five-star ANCAP safety rating for the Kluger is good news for families and fleet buyers,” said ANCAP chief executive Carla Hoorweg.
“With every new model generation, the highest levels of safety should be offered to provide consumers with immediate safety benefits as well as provide sustained road safety benefits for future owners and other road users.
“Toyota have sought to achieve the highest level of safety with the Kluger and succeeded. Brands taking this approach should be proud of the proactive role they are playing to improve safety on our roads.”
The Kluger comes standard with side curtain airbags that protect all three seating rows, as well as fatigue detection, intelligent speed assist and rear cross traffic alert.
The Kluger achieved its five-star rating without being fitted with a centre airbag.
