Toyota LandCruiser safety upgrade

Trailer sway control is now standard on LandCruisers, but it comes with a $1500 price hike

Toyota has updated its LandCruiser 200 Series portfolio with a handful of safety features, raising prices by $1500 on every model.

The most significant addition to the range is a new 'trailer sway control' system, making the 'Cruiser the first Toyota to be paired with such a device.

Already popular with towists and particularly grey nomads, the LandCruiser's new trailer sway control is integrated with the vehicle's electronic stability control systems and "helps the driver in the event that a trailer starts to swing from side to side," according to Toyota.

Trailer sway caused by sharp turns, shoddy roads or crosswinds is detected via the LandCruiser's yaw-rate sensor, along with steering and acceleration sensors, and mollified by deceleration if necessary.

The trailer sway control system will also warn the driver if things get dicey via an instrument panel warning light. It automatically turns on the brake lights to warn following motorists if trailer sway persists.

All 200 Series LandCruisers have a five-star ANCAP safety rating.

Other safety system upgrades for the LandCruiser 200 Series include the adoption of driver and front passenger knee airbags on volume-selling GX and GXL models, which add to front, side and curtain airbags, taking the total to eight. GXL models now gain privacy glass for the rear windows too.

Automatic headlights are now fitted as standard on VX and Sahara models, while the latter model also gets a digital radio tuner.

Engine options remain unchanged - 4.6-litre petrol V8 (227kW/439Nm) or 4.5-litre turbo-diesel V8 (195kW/650Nm) - and all models are still equipped as standard with 93 litre main and 45 litre sub fuel tanks.

However prices have risen by $1500 across the range with the addition of the trailer sway control system, with entry-level GX models rising from $77,490 to $78,990. Full pricing is below.

Turbo-diesel V8
GX $78,990
GXL $89,990
VX $100,990
Sahara $119,990
