Toyota small electric ute concept revealed

Baby brother to Toyota HiLux EV breaks cover with all-electric powertrain capable of 725km range

Toyota has previewed an all-new electric ute concept, dubbed the EPU, ahead of its full reveal at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show on October 26.

Full details are still to be released, but the announcement of the Toyota EPU shows the Japanese auto giant is looking to join the fast-growing US-centric, monocoque-chassis lifestyle ute market dominated by the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz – both of which could come to Australia in future.

While the powertrain remains under wraps, an interior image of the EPU concept shows 320 miles of range with 70 per cent battery charge, suggesting a maximum range of 450 miles or 725km.

A power-extending tailgate can also be seen, potentially accommodating larger objects without requiring aftermarket restraints or tie-downs.

Toyota has confirmed dimensions, which place the ute at 5070mm long, 1910mm wide and 1710mm tall, resting on a 3350mm wheelbase.

That’s considerably shorter than the HiLux (5325mm) yet is wider by 55mm and, notably, has a much longer wheelbase (+265mm).

We’ll wait until we hear further news from the Tokyo show stand, but the EPU concept could herald an upcoming production model that’s been touted as reviving the Toyota Stout nameplate.

As it stands, the EPU is described as a “next-generation mid-size pick-up truck concept, with a monocoque body delivering high durability to create a practical yet stylish BEV [battery electric vehicle]”.

The futuristic interior features a Tesla-inspired yoke steering wheel, loads of dashboard storage and a unique asymmetrical twin digital screen configuration with embedded gear shift and park brake toggle controls.

We’ve already driven a prototype version of the Toyota HiLux EV, and Toyota Australia is sure to be studying the prospect of an easier-riding lifestyle ute to stand alongside a harder-working model.

The Toyota EPU concept will be shown alongside an electric Toyota LandCruiser in Tokyo this week.
