Rumours of an all-new Toyota compact ute in development to sit below the top-selling Toyota HiLux have been circulating for more than a year now, with the latest speculation suggesting it will be based on the Corolla hatchback and the related Corolla Cross small SUV.
A rival for the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz, Toyota’s baby pick-up is not an officially confirmed program, although the Japanese car-maker has shown concepts pointing to its potential with a battery-electric powertrain.
Toyota has also applied for trademark protection of the Stout nameplate in a variety of overseas markets, suggesting a possible launch outside North America.
Just as the Ford Maverick is underpinned by the same C2 platform as the Focus, the Toyota Stout will likely use the same TNGA-C platform as found under the Corolla small car and Corolla Cross SUV.
And it’s the latter which has prompted the renders from Kolesa.ru you see here of what such a model could look like.
We don’t have a timeframe on the production Stout, but these digital images showcase what could be in alignment with Toyota’s bigger pick-up offerings like the Tundra and HiLux, while sticking to the Corolla Cross roots.
Starting with the stretched wheelbase, the Corolla Cross ute is noticeably longer than the SUV but has narrower rear doors in order to maximise load space, with the tub extending well past the rear axle.
Ground clearance doesn’t look especially generous, while the tyre profile shown here is clearly road-focused.
Helping make the package look more imposing is a new front bumper flaunting body-coloured elements as opposed to the SUV’s black arrangement, while the grille has been retextured with a GR Sport-style black honeycomb.
The rear lighting signature is naturally different on the ute compared to the SUV, with designers blending familiar Corolla Cross elements with those of the Tundra and HiLux.
Toyota is understood to be carrying out more feasibility studies into the sub-HiLux ute project, which suggests the Stout may not be seen until later this decade – when the next-generation Corolla and Corolla Cross is in circulation.
