Toyota's 3.8L/100km Corolla

It's is one of the most efficient small cars in its class but it's not headed down under

Toyota showed off its Auris Hybrid small car at the 2010 Geneva motor show, a car that is badged Corolla in regions such as Australia, but don't rush out and place your order as it's not heading to Australia any time soon.

The new Corolla/Auris Hybrid combines a compact petrol engine with an electric motor to deliver an ultra-low fuel consumption figure of just 3.8L/100km, but Toyota Australia spokesman Mike Breen told the Carsales Network the new model will not be coming to Australia.

"There are no plans to sell this generation Corolla Hybrid in Australia," said Breen, who added that the Prius and Camry Hybrids would fly the low emissions flag in Australia for now.

But the next generation Corolla Hybrid? Watch this space...

As well as using low levels of fuel, the Toyota Corolla Hybrid also delivers "class-leading" CO2 emissions of 89 grams per kilometre.

Toyota will begin building right-hand drive versions of the Corolla Hybrid at its UK factory in Burnsaton, and the HSD (Hybrid Synergy Drive) powertrain enables the small car run on pure electric power for up to two kilometres, at speeds of around 50km/h, using no fuel for short periods.

The Japanese car making giant has made it clear it wants to have a hybrid version of all its passenger vehicles by 2020, and augmenting its biggest seller, the Corolla, with a petrol-electric engine is the next step toward achieving this goal.
