Track-ready McLaren 600LT Spider teased

McLaren posts picture tease of what is almost certain to be convertible McLaren 600LT Spider

McLaren Automotive has confirmed it will pull the drapes off a fifth 'Longtail' model next week after teasing what's thought to be the new McLaren 600LT Spider.

Announcing it will unveil another LT on Wednesday January 16, the single image released by the British supercar-maker clearly details the current 600LT's extended tail, engine cover, unique top-exit exhaust pipes and ceramic-wrapped rear spoiler.

Despite not being officially confirmed as the McLaren 600LT Spider, our confidence comes from McLaren's remarks back in June that it was developing a wild roadster version of the limited 600LT coupe.

Claimed to "meet the exacting McLaren LT philosophy of increased power, reduced weight, optimised aerodynamics, track-focused dynamics and limited availability", the 600LT Spider is likely to come with a revised version of the coupe's aero.

Under the rear boot lid you'll find the same 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 that has been tuned to produce 441kW of power and 600Nm of torque.

Despite a circa 40kg weight increase over its tin-top sibling, performance of the 600LT Spider is set to be almost identical to the coupe, reaching 100km/h from standstill in just 2.9 seconds.

Perhaps more impressive is that 0-200km/h takes an incredible 8.2 seconds.

Roof up we expect the Spider to come close to matching the coupe's 328km/h max speed.

Like the 600LT coupe, the 600LT Spider's production will be limited, although there's unlikely to be a volume restriction.

Instead, McLaren will only manufacture the convertible Longtail at its Woking plant in the UK for just 12 months.

As far as pricing is concerned, expect the 600LT Spider to command a premium over the $455,000 (plus on-road costs) that McLaren Australia charges for the 600LT coupe, with the extreme track-ready LT roadster set to weigh in at around $475,000.

The new 600LT Spider will be the third new model introduced as part of McLaren's $2 billion Track25 business plan that was announced last year.
