An optional 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine shared with the Barina RS and Cruze is the major change to Holden's diminutive Trax for 2015.
The compact SUV, which currently outsells recently introduced market rivals the Ford EcoSport and Peugeot 2008, continues with the 1.8-litre engine offered at launch just a year ago. But the upper-level LTZ variant can now also be ordered with the 1.4-litre iTi engine, producing 103kW and 200Nm. Peak power and torque for the turbo engine both arrive much lower in the rev range (1850rpm for torque and 4900rpm for power) than for the naturally-aspirated 1.8, which hints that the turbo Trax will deliver improved driveability. Holden offers the new engine with just one transmission, a six-speed automatic. Combined-cycle fuel consumption for the new variant is 6.9L/100km, based on using 95 RON premium-grade petrol, which Holden recommends for the Trax LTZ 1.4-litre iTi. Local engineers have calibrated the new engine's power delivery to suit the Australian driving environment.
"The 1.4 litre turbocharged engine provides drivers with even greater levels of refinement and performance, and when combined with the locally tuned chassis and steering, makes for a really fun and enjoyable drive," said Jeremy Tassone, Holden's Vehicle Development Manager.
"Holden's talented engineers have done a fantastic job to ensure that the new 1.4 litre Trax LTZ has been designed to suit Australian driver preferences. Their hard work has really paid off."
Visually, the Trax LTZ can be picked by its new 18-inch alloy wheels. The range-topping model is also upgraded with rain-sensing wipers, a driver's armrest and a sunroof added to the standard specification. While most of the changes apply to the high-grade Trax LTZ, both levels of trim are now available with a new exterior colour, Blaze Red. Other colours in the range carried over include Summit White, Snowflake Pearl, Carbon Flash, Boracay Blue, Orange Rock, Nitrate and Satin Steel Grey. Most colours – other than Blaze Red and Summit White – are prestige paints, attracting an extra charge of $550.
The revised Trax is scheduled to go on sale officially from later this month and the price for the Trax LTZ 1.4-litre iTI is $29,990. All variants carried over have risen in price by $500 since the car's launch here 12 months ago. At entry level the 1.8-litre Trax LS with five-speed manual is priced at $23,990 and automatic raises the price to $26,190. The LTZ grade with the standard 1.8-litre engine and automatic transmission now costs $28,490.
Holden offers the Trax with capped-price servicing for four services over the first three years of 60,000km of ownership. The price of each service is $185, irrespective of the engine fitted.
