Mercedes-Benz marked World Environment Day this month (June 5) by receiving an environmental thumbs-up certificate for its next-generation E-Class from engineering and technical consultancy-cum-environmental 'ratings agency' TÜV Süd.
TÜV's coveted accreditation is the result of an intensive audit on the basis of adherence to ISO standard 14062, which focuses on the depth to which a manufacturer works to minimise a vehicle's environmental footprint throughout its conceptualisation, design, development and manufacture, and its recyclability.
In the case of the upcoming E-Class, the audit involved the examination of more than 40,000 individual processes related to the environment, such as eco-balancing, disassembly and recycling planning, materials and process engineering, design and production. Each was assessed, measured and analysed in depth to produce a final overall 'eco-profile'.
The audit concluded that from manufacture through an estimated life cycle of 250,000 km of operation to final disposal, this E-Class generates 14 per cent less CO2 than did the superseded model at launch 2002. Thanks largely to cleaner engines, total nitrogen oxide emissions are down 20 per cent.
The award means the E-Class joins Benz's A, B, C and S-Class and the GLK SUV in receiving TÜV Süd certification.
