The wraps have come off the updated 2021 Mazda CX-5… but you wouldn’t know it by looking at it.
With virtually no exterior changes, the enhanced Mazda CX-5 has broken cover in the USA and is headed to Australia in the first-half of 2021.
The headline upgrades include a bigger 10.2-inch LCD infotainment screen that can only be controlled via a rotary dial (which means no more touch-screen) and the addition of new safety systems, namely driver attention alert and rear autonomous emergency braking (AEB).
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are part of the package and US customers get a free three-year subscription to Mazda Connected Services, a system that allows owners to remotely control the CX-5, including starting and stopping the engine, locking and unlocking the doors from their smartphone.
It's not yet clear whether the Mazda Connected Services will be offered locally.
While the changes aren’t earth-shattering they will give the Mazda CX-5 a bigger safety and technology arsenal with which to fight Australia's top-selling SUV, the Toyota RAV4.
They will also help the CX-5, which was previously Australia's top-selling mid-size SUV, battle new rivals including the new Ford Escape later this year and the new Hyundai Tucson, Nissan X-TRAIL and Mitsubishi Outlander in 2021.
Mazda Australia is still working on its local 2021 CX-5 line-up, pricing and specifications for which are still to be confirmed.
More features could be added to Aussie versions of the 2021 Mazda CX-5 and possibly more standard equipment across the range.
Powertrain options may get culled from the current quartet of four-cylinders on offer: 2.0-litre petrol (115kW/200Nm), 2.5-litre petrol (140kW/252Nm), 2.5-litre turbo-petrol (170kW/420Nm) and 2.2-litre turbo-diesel (140kW/450Nm).
Pricing for the current Mazda CX-5 ranges between $30,980 and $51,330.
With 11,946 sales or 14.1 per cent share of the medium SUV segment, the Mazda CX-5 is currently the second-best selling mid-size SUV behind the Toyota RAV4, which has notched up 19,853 sales and 23.4 per cent market share year-to-date.
