Updated Toyota Corolla range touches down

Even more power than first thought for updated hybrid versions of Australia’s top-selling small car – at a cost

Toyota Australia has finally released full pricing and specification details of its upgraded 2023 Toyota Corolla range, revealing a $2735 upswing in the best-selling small car’s starting price and a 13kW bump for hybrid variants.

Due to enter local showrooms later this month, the new Toyota Corolla line-up now starts from $28,130 plus on-road costs for the Ascent Sport regardless of its body style and will feature a new range flagship – below the vicious Toyota GR Corolla – in the form of the $39,120 ZR hybrid sedan.

Prices are up between $2485-$3785 depending on the variant, with the hybrids being the worst offenders due to their new electric motor, power control unit, lithium-ion battery pack and downsized hybrid transaxle.

All of these changes mean the electrified 1.8-litre powertrain now develops 103kW of power, however, Toyota is yet to confirm any change in the combined fuel consumption figure, which previously stood at 4.2L/100km.

Internal combustion versions have been treated to a power bump too, albeit a marginal one, with hatches now developing 126kW/202Nm (+1kW/2Nm) while the heavier sedans churn out 126kW/203Nm (+1kW/3Nm).

All Corollas continue to come exclusively with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) sending power to the front wheels.

Updated powertrains only go so far in justifying a 10 per cent price increase though, which is why the 2023 Corolla range is armed to the teeth with new creature comforts and safety equipment.

Headlining the new features is Toyota’s latest 8.0-inch infotainment system boasting new graphics, faster processing and some key shortcut buttons, as well as smartphone mirroring and DAB+ digital radio on all variants.

Ascent Sport hatches have also inherited a new 7.0-inch display within the instrument cluster, while the top-spec ZR variants nab a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

Ascent Sport hybrid sedans, meanwhile, gain satellite-navigation as standard and illuminated vanity mirrors on the back of the sun visors.

Toyota Connected Services are now also included on all grades, as is blind spot monitoring and a series of updated and expanded functions for the existing safety systems like the pre-collision safety system, which adds motorcycle detection, intersection collision avoidance support for crossing vehicles, emergency steering assist and acceleration suppression at low speeds.

All of the Corolla’s cameras and radars have been updated to improve their obstacle or vehicle detection, while the lane trace assist now includes an emergency driving stop system that brings the vehicle to a gradual stop if it detects the driver is no longer making vehicle inputs.

You’ll be able to spot the new Corolla variants by their redesigned grille, refreshed colour palette and, for variants riding on 16-inch wheels, tweaked alloy wheels design.
