The facelifted 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS is about to enter Australian showrooms priced from $184,900 plus on-road costs – $15,000 more than the model it replaces.
That figure refers to the base 450d 4MATIC and eventually grows to $409,900 plus ORCs for the flagship Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4MATIC.
As with the smaller GLE and the C-Class sedan, Mercedes-Benz Australia has tried to streamline the GLS purchasing process by adding more standard equipment and fewer optional extras after examining the buying habits of customers, hence the inflated entry price.
The list of new gear is an extensive one, specifically comprising and AMG Line exterior, multibeam LED headlights, driving assistance package plus, parking package 360, keyless-go, Burmester surround sound system, multi-contour seats, climatised front seats, heated rear seats, power closing doors, Thermotronic, interior assistant, Air Balance, MBUX augmented reality, panoramic sunroof, a head-up display, aluminium-look running boards and guard 360 vehicle protection plus.
Further justifying the base model’s new price premium is the fact it’s gone from the 400d to the 450d, with higher power and torque figures to match its bigger numerical nomenclature.
The new 3.0-litre turbo-diesel six outputs 270kW/750Nm compared to the old 400d’s 243kW/700Nm, making for a noticeable improvement in both outright and real-world performance.
However, no changes have been made to the twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8s powering the GLS 63 AMG or the GLS 600 Maybach.
Other tweaks include new Sodalite Blue metallic and MANUFAKTUR Alpine Grey paint finishes and redesigned alloy wheel options for the AMG Maybach, plus the previously seen exterior and cabin design changes.
Optional extras for the new GLS comprise a $2900 towing package, $9900 rear comfort package and a $14,500 ‘first class rear individual seat package’ available only for the flagship Maybach.
