Upgraded Jeep Compass now pricier

Jeep’s small SUV priced at least $1000 higher, but picks up significant equipment upgrades

Three months after its global unveiling, Australian details for the facelifted 2021 Jeep Compass have been announced, with prices rising by at least $1000 to now start from $37,950 plus on-road costs.

Two models are heading to Aussie showrooms from mid-July, the Jeep Compass Launch Edition (from $37,950) and the Compass S-Limited (from $46,950), which will take on a host of rivals including carsales’ Best Small SUV 2021, the Hyundai Kona.

The range will be expanded in late 2021 with the Compass Limited (from $43,950) and Compass Trailhawk (from $51,250).

The pricing represents a $1000 increase over most equivalent outgoing models, except for the rough-and-ready Trailhawk that’s now $1800 dearer.

A special-edition 80th Anniversary model (from $47,941) will also arrive later in the year.

All Compass models are paired with an automatic transmission and equipment levels have been upgraded to include wireless phone charging, a digital instrument cluster, LED headlights and a 10.1-inch central touch-screen as standard across the range.

The cabin features a more mature design with a new-look dashboard complete with overt stitching, while the new 10.1-inch touch-screen display that supersedes the 8.4-inch screen runs Jeep’s latest Uconnect 5 operating system.

This enables wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, sat-nav and even ‘Hey Jeep’ verbal commands for the climate and audio systems.

While the entry-level model gets a 7.0-inch digital driver’s display, all other models upgrade to a new 10.25-inch instrument cluster.

The facelifted Jeep Compass also brings a new look to bear, showing off sleeker new LED headlight clusters and LED fog lights that flank a redesigned seven-slot grille, giving the SUV a more modern, next-gen look reminiscent of the bigger new Jeep Grand Cherokee.

New-look alloy wheels are part of the updated Compass package and Trailhawk models get a resculpted front bumper as well.

There are seven colour options: Bright White, Colorado Red, Brilliant Black, Galaxy Blue, Grey Magnesio, Hunter Green and Minimal Grey.

Safety systems have been upgraded across the entire model range to include active lane management, adaptive cruise control, camera-based traffic sign recognition (real-time speed limit info), autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with vehicle, cyclist and pedestrian detection, and a driver fatigue warning system.

A 360-degree camera system is standard on Trailhawk and offered as a cost option as part of a premium package ($2950) on the S-Limited, which also adds a panoramic glass sunroof, heated and cooled front seats and a heated steering wheel.

See below for the full model breakdown and equipment lists.

All Compass models bar Trailhawk are powered by a carryover 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol ‘Tigershark’ engine (129kW/229Nm).

The Trailhawk retains its 2.0-litre turbo-diesel powerplant (125kW/350Nm).

The entry-level Compass Launch Edition comes with a six-speed automatic, while all other models have a nine-speed auto.

Like all Jeep vehicles, the Compass is backed by a five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty, lifetime roadside assistance (when serviced with Jeep dealers) and a capped-price service program.

Jeep sales in Australia are up by 70 per cent for the first half of 2021, with the Jeep Gladiator ute delivering an impressive 255 per cent sales increase. The Compass has rebounded strongly since 2020 as well, with sales up by almost 70 per cent, from 271 to 459 units year-on-year.

However, in its class the Compass owns a paltry 0.7 per cent share of the segment.

The MG ZS is currently the top-selling small SUV in Australia after the first six months of trading this year, racking up 9093 sales and keeping its nose in front of the Hyundai Kona (8215).
