Upgrades for Hyundai i40
Multi-mode drive system now standard on all i40 models; top-deck Tourer Premium wagon gains remote control tailgateHyundai’s Toyota Camry-size i40 sedan and wagon have been handed minor updates for the 2014 model year to improve convenience and add a little to the driving experience.
All models, sedans and wagons, now come with an all-new drive mode selection system that primarily affects the six-speed automatic transmission by offering the choice of Normal, Eco or Sports settings.
Eco mode programs the transmission shift points to maximise fuel economy, while the Sports mode can delay upshifts for maximum performance, and reduce the amount of power assistance to the steering system.
The Korean company has also developed a new remote tailgate system for the i40 Tourer wagon. Dubbed Smart Tailgate, the system is enabled via the User settings in the i40’s Supervision dash controls and activates the tailgate when the remote key is pressed, for three seconds or more, within the 50cm to 100cm detection zone. The whole process is accompanied, for safety, by the sounding of an alarm and the flashing of the hazard lights and can be cancelled at any time by pressing the button on the smart key.
There is a downside: the Smart Tailgate is fitted only to the Premium-spec i40 Tourer.
As well as some changes to the alloy wheels – on Elite and Premium models the finish is now dark silver metallic, while the 17-inch alloys get a new design – there is also a new shark fin antenna for Tourer Elite and Premium models.
The changes come on top of the Smart Parking Assist and the Lane Departure Warning and Assist systems that are standard on all i40s.
