Volkswagen will bring its budget light hatch, up! to Australia from Q4, 2012, initially in three-door hatch guise. The five-door version is scheduled to arrive on Australian shores in the second half of 2013.
The car, which is positioned beneath the current Polo, will likely be priced from $14,490 - thanks in part to the favourable exchange rate - competing with the likes of Hyundai i20 and Holden Barina Spark as the German marque seeks to not only cash in or the burgeoning city car market, but to draw younger buyers to the brand.
Arriving initially in three-door hatch body style, the success of up! will determine if other models will join the lineup down the track. A cheaper, Skoda derivative could also be in the pipeline, but this move, along with the car's spec and pricing for the Australian market, are still a closely guarded secret.
In Europe, Volkswagen's newest, smallest member of the family is offered with a range of 1.0-litre three-cylinder engines – petrol, diesel and natural gas.
A plug-in (electric) model also said to be under development.
