Subaru has introduced a more powerful 2.5-litre flat four-cylinder petrol engine for the US-market Subaru XV that produces 135kW and 239Nm of torque.
Joining the same 113kW/196Nm 2.0-litre offered in our version of the compact SUV, the new engine arrives as part of a mid-life upgrade for the American-spec XV, which is badged as the Crosstrek, including exterior updates and new AWD tech.
Unfortunately, unlike the less powerful 2.0-litre that's available with a six-speed manual, the new naturally-aspirated 2.5-litre boxer comes only with the car-maker's CVT auto in the most expensive Limited and Sport trims.
There are no performance claims for the new 2.5-litre model, which comes standard with the car-maker's all-wheel drive system.
Opt for the 2.5 Sport and Subaru's rival for the Mazda CX-3 comes with a new dual-function X-MODE function that can pre-arm the four-wheel drive hardware and traction control calibration for snow, dirt or mud.
Externally, all US-spec Crosstreks come with a redesigned front bumper, new fog light surrounds and a different grille.
The new Sport trim adds dark-grey 17-inch alloy wheels and a gunmetal finish for the grille, mirror caps and badges.
Some of the new tech introduced includes an updated Subaru Eyesight driver-assist system that now features semi-autonomous cruise control that also auto-steers to keep the car in its lane.
There's no word yet on a facelifted Subaru XV for Australia, or whether we'll get the more powerful 2.5-litre boxer engine.
