Value added Volvo XC40 Special Edition arrives

Special Edition is a win-win for buyers offering more kit for less cash than the base model

The 2024 Volvo XC40 Special Edition has landed in Australian showrooms and offers more kit than the entry-level SUV for a lower price.

Priced from $59,990 the new Volvo XC40 Special Edition is a cool $2000 cheaper than the previously cheapest Volvo XC40 Plus but gets extra kit like a 360-degree camera, 19-inch alloy wheels, half-leather seats and free premium paint.

This is on top of the model’s standard 12.0-inch digital instrument cluster, a 9.0-inch infotainment system that runs Google's Android Automotive operating system that incorporates both wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate control and keyless entry.

Just one powertrain will be available with the new limited edition, the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder 48-volt mild-hybrid petrol that produces 145kW and 300Nm of torque that's combined with an eight-speed automatic that drives the front wheels.

Volvo hasn't announced just how many Volvo XC40 Special Editions it plans to offer Australian buyers but instead says the value-packed small SUV, that was judged the 2019 carsales Car of the Year, will remain available to order until December 30, 2024.

While Volvo has announced that it will transition to becoming an all-electric brand by 2030, Volvo Cars Australia has announced plans to go EV-only by 2026. As part of its electric car strategy the battery-powered XC40 Recharge will be renamed the EX40, and will sit above the all-new EX30.

Both the combustion and all-electric Volvo XC40 remain the Swedish brand’s best-selling model in Australia, with 1879 of the small SUV finding homes in the first seven months of 2024 - accounting for a third of all Volvo sales.

That figure actually represents a fall in volume by around 46.7 per cent, compared to the first seven months of 2023 but it's thought many sales might have been cannibalised by the availability of the smaller Volvo EX30 EV that's entire first year's allocation of 1500 vehicles sold out even before first deliveries started.

Orders for the brand's entry EV now stretch into 2025.
