VIDEO: Hyundai teases i30 N sound

Korean brand once again teases its Golf GTI-rival, this time with the sound of the turbocharged 2.0-litre

Hyundai has released a short video teasing the sound of its first ever N performance model, which will go on sale in Europe later this year.

Arriving in Australia some time in 2017, the five-door 2.0-litre turbo-petrol i30 hatch is expected to come with 200kW+/300Nm and run out to a top speed of 250km/h.

Going head-to-head with the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Renault Megane RS, the i30 N will also come with an optional track-focused performance package that could boast even more power.

Initially, the front-wheel drive i30 N hatch will come with a manual gearbox and a limited-slip differential. A version equipped with an automatic transmission – most likely a dual-clutch unit — will arrive around 2018.

An all-wheel drive version could also be available later on.

Masterminded by former BMW M chief engineer Albert Biermann, Hyundai's N sub-brand will be rapidly expanded to the firm's range of SUVs and even its IONIQ hybrid and pure-electric hatch.

The big Genesis models will also get the N treatment, but won't be badged N models. Instead, the luxury sedan will get its own naming convention as the N sub-brand will only be reserved for hot Hyundais.
