Volkswagen Australia details its new flagship

Arteon 206TSI R-Line to arrive Down Under fully loaded from October

Volkswagen Group Australia (VAG) has announced full details – but not pricing – for its new flagship sedan, the Arteon, ahead of its local release in October.

Confirmed for our market in one highly-specified variant, the Arteon 206TSI R-Line will replace the Passat 206TSI R-Line (priced from $57,990) as the German car-maker’s most expensive sedan.

As such, it will come with a wide range of Volkswagen’s latest safety and convenience technologies, but the same 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine delivering 206kW of power over 5100-6500rpm and 350Nm over torque over 1700-5600rpm.

Equipped with VW’s new DQ381 seven-speed wet-clutch DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission and 4MOTION all-wheel-drive, it’s claimed to hit 100km/h in 5.6 seconds.

Apart from wearing its “evocative new design direction”, the company claims the Arteon brings a level of standard technology that, when matched by models from luxury brands, is only available as part of expensive options packs.

“A halo car should include the highest level of standard specification and this is just one aspect in which our new gran turismo sets benchmarks,” said VAG’s General Manager of Marketing and Product, Ben Wilks.

“Democratising German technology is the key to fulfilling our target of being the ‘Premium for the People’ brand. Moreover, unlike some SUVs and comparable cars from German prestige brands, the Arteon is made in Europe.”

The only Arteon options will be metallic or pearl effect paint, a panoramic glass sunroof and a Dynaudio Premium Sound System with 20-inch Rosario alloy wheels (as pictured here).

The only standard paint colour is Pure White, with metallic hues including Pyrit Silver, Manganese Grey, Tumeric Yellow, Atlantic Blue and Chilli Red (pictured) and the pearl choice being Deep Black.

Volkswagen says new and unique features for the Arteon will include Head-up Display, Area View, Dynamic Light Assist, Easy open and close tailgate, 3-Colour Ambient Interior Lighting, Emergency Assist 2, Audi-style dynamic indicators, frameless side windows, heated rear outboard seats, 19-inch Montevideo alloys, Proactive Occupant Protection (rear-sensing), unique Active Info Display theme and unique R-Line seat style.

Other standard equipment will include Active Info Display, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Front Assist with City Emergency Braking, Side Assist, Rear Traffic Alert, Lane Assist, Park Assist, Adaptive Chassis Control, Driving Profile Selection, power folding door mirrors, keyless access and push-button starting, driver’s seat memory, tinted rear windows and Discover Pro 9.2-inch infotainment system with gesture control and App-Connect.

Completing the Arteon’s standard kit list are LED headlights, R-Line C-signature air intakes in high-gloss black, R-Line badging, high-gloss black spoiler, Titanium black headlining and unique R-Line black carbon Nappa leather upholstery.

Volkswagen’s big new coupe-style liftback is 95mm longer overall and rides on a 50mm longer wheelbase than the Passat, creating what’s claimed to be “spacious premium class accommodation for rear passengers”, who score 45mm of extra legroom. Boot volume is 563 litres.

Stand by for pricing -- which will exceed $60,000, thereby eclipsing every VW model exept the Touareg and Multivan -- before the Arteon arrives in local showrooms in October.
