Volkswagen will slash its model range. That's the news from German newspaper, Handelsblatt over the weekend.
The outlet claims 40 models out of a total of 340 different vehicles produced by the Volkswagen Group will be killed off, or not replaced. The move is a result of a new cost-cutting strategy introduced following the car giant's #Dieselgate emissions scandal.
The newspaper claims the billions saved will be reinvested in developing the 30 new electric models that will be introduced over the next ten years as well as developing new autonomous-driving technology and car-sharing schemes.
Volkswagen has not commented on the model cull, but industry commentators report that niche vehicles, like the Volkswagen Beetle, will be most at risk from the new cost cuts.
The Dieselgate emissions-rigging scandal has so far cost the Volkswagen Group €16.2 billion, but that number could still increase once legal costs in the US are added to the bill.
