Fresh pics of retro-reboot claimed to give first glimpse of production Microbus due in 2022A late-stage pre-production version of the 2022 Volkswagen ID. Buzz has been shown ahead of the all-electric van and people-mover's launch in Europe in the second half of next year.
The images of the lightly camouflaged ID. Buzz were teased as part of the recent online Volkswagen ID.5 launch held at VW's Wolfsburg headquarters in Germany.
Set to be built at the European auto giant's Hannover plant, the battery-electric reborn Kombi variant is primed to offer seating for up to eight occupants.
Based on the same MEB architecture as the Volkswagen ID.3, ID.4 and latest ID.5, the ID. Buzz has been created both as a people-mover and small delivery van with an emphasis on maximising cabin space.
Drawing deliberate design cues with the original Kombi, our latest look at the ID. Buzz reveals how designers will tone down the original concept's design for production.
It features more defined headlights that are linked by an LED light bar and a large VW logo. There's also a front-hinged driver and passenger door and twin sliding rear doors.
Many of the changes are believed to be based around the need to meet pedestrian impact safety standards.
No technical details have been released, but it's thought the EV will be powered by a 77kWh lithium-ion battery and come with either a 128kW, 150kW or 220kW electric motor.
The range is expected to be around 450km – less than the ID.5 on account of its blocky shape.
Already previewed earlier this year, the ID. Buzz will feature the car-maker's latest Level 3 autonomous tech that will be upgraded during its life to Level 4, potentially as soon as 2024.
Thanks to its partnership with US autonomous driving experts Argo AI, this should see it be capable of one day operating with no human driver on board in some areas.
Officially, there's no word when the ID. Buzz is set to land in Australia but it's thought the battery-powered van could make its debut here shortly after Volkswagen Australia begins its EV onslaught in 2023 with the Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4.
