Images of Volkswagen's Scirocco -- due to be unveiled at the imminent Geneva motor show -- have leaked onto the web ahead of schedule.
The pics reveal a car that looks production-ready, and which differs appreciably from the IROC concept (more here) that bowed at the 2006 Paris motor show.
The latter was conceived to rekindle the essence of the 1970s Giugiaro-styled Scirocco, and its IROC moniker was arrived at by plucking the middle four letters of the Scirocco's name.
We here at the Carsales Network can't help but notice further that it would be pronounced "I Rock" and in the US market, 'IROC' is an acronym for "International Race of Champions" and has been applied to special variants of the Chevy Camaro -- itself a sports coupe.
The biggest changes vis-à-vis the concept pertain to the new-age Scirocco's face, which has been toned down markedly from the former's brash snout.
Probably as a concession to crash safety/pedestrian protection, the bumper now extends right across the width of the car and the grille of the showroom variant is confined to the lower half of the bumper/spoiler assembly.
The rump has also been toned down slightly, and the most noticeable alterations are the conventional round tailpipes, in lieu of the twin trapezoidal pipes that exited from the IROC's rear diffuser. However, the profile and overall proportions are largely as per the concept.
When the original Scirocco was launched in 1974, it was pitched as a stylish, affordable coupe with lively (if not electrifying) performance.
It'll be much the same with the modern-day variant, which will share its mechanicals with the more mainstream Golf. Production volume is expected to be 100,000 cars per year, with the first Scirocco rolling off the line later this year.
Although yet to be confirmed, the engine line-up is expected to include Volkswagen's TSI 'Twincharger' 1.4-litre four with 125kW, as well as the 147kW 2.0-litre turbo four from the Golf GTI.
Provided the Scirocco retains the brilliant all-around capabilities of the Golf GTI, it should prove an entertaining package with bags of appeal for the style-conscious set.
Oz debut? No word as yet, but a Sydney show unveiling in October may well be on the cards.
