Volkswagen, Skoda and Cupra confirm flood of new models by 2025

German, Czech and Spanish brands announce unprecedented new product onslaught for Oz after COVID shutdowns and chip shortages

Volkswagen Group Australia has confirmed it plans to introduce an incredible 20 new or facelifted model lines between now and 2025 in a dramatic bid to rapidly ramp-up sales for its Volkswagen, VW Commercial, Skoda and Cupra brands Down Under.

Among the 20 models it plans to introduce here, around 15 will be all-new to the Australian market, including six new battery-electric vehicles.

Spearheading the EV charge from mid-2024 will be the long-awaited Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5 mid-size electric SUVs, including hotter GTX dual-motor all-wheel drive versions, and their Czech sister models in the Skoda Enyaq SUV and Coupe – also in both single-motor rear-drive and 220kW-plus RS forms.

Volkswagen ID.5

It's not yet clear whether their July 2024 ETA refers to pre-sales or delivery timing, but Volkswagen hopes the ID.4 and ID.5 will help end Tesla's domination of EV sales in Australia, where Toyota aims to do the same from early 2024 with its Model Y-rivalling bZ4X.

Just as important to that end will be the arrival of the MG4 and GWM Ora-fighting Volkswagen ID.3 electric hatch and the VW Kombi-channelling, battery-powered Volkswagen’s ID. Buzz people-mover and ID. Buzz Cargo delivery van in late 2024.

Other key VW models to be introduced by the end of next year will be the refreshed Touareg (early 2024) and, in late 2024, the new Tiguan medium SUV, new T7 Multivan diesel people-mover and facelifted T-Cross light SUV.

Missing in action will be the new ninth-generation Volkswagen Passat, following the axing of all Passat, Arteon and Golf wagon models in Australia this year.

In its place, Skoda will be hoping the new Superb sedan and wagon will appease Aussies who don’t want and SUV but still need a large family car when it arrives in late 2024 – around the same time as the new Kodiaq large SUV.

After celebrating its first birthday in Australia last month, Cupra is set to also have a busy couple of years with the arrival of refreshed Born EV hatch, Leon hatch and Formentor SUV model by the end of 2024. There's also a chance the Leon Sportwagon might also land here from the middle of next year too.

Expect the Cupra Tavascan mid-size all-electric SUV, which is tipped to be the brand's future global best-seller, to make a big sales impact from mid-2025, followed by the large Cupra Terramar seven-seat SUV from late 2025 or 2026.

Cupra Tavascan

Missing from the 2025 product plan is the Cupra Raval, Volkswagen ID.2 and Skoda’s closely-related small electric hatchback, all of which are set to go on sale in Europe in late 2025 but are yet to be official locked-in for Australia.

Another surprising omission is the Volkswagen T7 California camper, but that's expected to be confirmed for Australian release by around 2025 in the coming months.

Volkswagen Australia has stressed that all timings listed below are estimates only and subject to change.
