Volkswagen Tiguan 132TSI R-Line Edition lands in Oz

New variant brings R-Line Edition looks and sportiness at a lower price

Volkswagen Australia has injected its Tiguan line-up with a sporty new flavour, introducing a new 132TSI R-Line variant to its SUV range.

Priced from $46,990 plus on-road costs and limited to 1000 vehicles in Australia, the Tiguan 132TSI R-Line Edition is based on the five seat Tiguan 132TSI Comfortline already on sale.

It effectively reduces the price of entry for the full-power 162kW R-Line Edition of the Tiguan by $6000, with a few less herbs from the engine.

The $3840 over premium over the Tiguan 132TSI Comfortline gets R-Line buyers additional tech including a Driver Assistance Package with adaptive cruise control, side assist, rear cross traffic alert, traffic jam assist and emergency assist.

Inside, the R-Line shows its sportier wares through two-tone ‘Race’ cloth upholstery, 19-inch Sebring alloy wheels, second-generation digital instrument cluster and tinted windows.

Power comes courtesy of a familiar 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder good for 132kW/320Nm.

Sending drive to all four wheels via a seven-speed DSG automatic, the 132TSI R-Line Edition can notch 0-100km/h in a claimed 7.7 seconds while returning a claimed fuel consumption average of 7.5L/100km.

The newcomer is in Volkswagen showrooms now and can be optioned with an electric glass sunroof ($2000) or metallic or pearl paint ($700).

Volkswagen Australia says demand for sporty-looking Tiguan SUVs is going through the roof, hence the need for another model in the range.

"The single best selling variant of the Tiguan, either in five seat or seven seat Allspace guise, remains the top-specification 162TSI," said Jason Bradshaw, Volkswagen director of customer experience and marketing.

"Some 80 per cent of 162 TSI customers choose the optional R-Line package. Customers told us that they wanted this option for the 132TSI. We listened. Here it is."

Volkswagen plans to further broaden its Tiguan line-up with a sub-$40,000 110TSI version in the coming months.

Beyond that, the car-maker plans to introduce more SUVs to its Australian line-up – namely, the Touareg, T-Roc and T-Cross.
