Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace upgraded

Seven-seat version of German mid-size SUV gets similar makeover; here early next year

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace has been revealed and is now in production, ahead of its Australian arrival in the first quarter of next year.

Effectively mirroring the upgrades applied to the short-wheelbase five-seat Volkswagen Tiguan released here last month, following the announcement of (much) higher pricing specs in February, this is not the most comprehensive mid-life makeover for the German giant’s seven-seat family SUV.

Interior and exterior dimensions remain largely unchanged for the updated Allspace, which accounts for around 55 per cent of Tiguan sales globally with 1.5 million sales.

But a fresh front-end design now brings the stretched version into line with the latest standard Tiguan, which also donates its fancier headlights, updated driver-assistance systems and reduced fuel consumption.

However, like the regular Tiguan, Australian Allspace models will largely carry over their existing petrol engines, and while diesel power will continue after only just being reinstated to the line-up there will be no hybrids.

The difference is that the current 140kW 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel will likely be ditched in favour of the newest oiler from the capacious Volkswagen Group shelves.

As in the five-seat Tiguan, the new diesel will lift peak power to 147kW and maximum torque to 400Nm, all while pulling down the fuel consumption, though Volkswagen hasn’t locked in the figures yet.

The petrol engine in the base 110TSI should remain as per the outgoing Allspace, new Tiguan and upcoming Golf 8 – a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 110kW of power and 250Nm of torque.

The next steps up the performance (and price) ladder will be the 132kW/320Nm and 162kW/350Nm versions of Volkswagen’s 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine.

All of these engine options will mate to eight-speed automatic transmissions, and only the entry-level 110TSI will be available in front-wheel drive configuration.

One of the key features Volkswagen is pushing on the Tiguan Allspace is the LED Matrix headlights, plus the new touch panel to control the climate-control air-conditioning system.

Pre-sales are already starting in Europe, where the 2022 Allspace range adopts the same new naming structure as the Tiguan, with Life, Elegance and R-Line equipment grades replacing the existing Allspace’s Comfortline, Highline and newly released Wolfsburg Edition variants.

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan has grown by 22mm to 4723mm in length, but the interior dimensions remain the same – including a huge 700 litres of luggage space –due to an unchanged wheelbase on the MQB platform.

Like the Tiguan, the Allspace will receive both the VW new logo and a ‘Tiguan’ badge on its tailgate, which can be raised via a leg kick beneath the bumper.

The mid-range Elegance version of the Allspace runs with 19-inch wheels and tyres, while the R-Line can lift that to 20-inch.

Alongside the latest connectivity tech, there are very few knobs inside the cabin, which is a mixed blessing, with touch panels and slider areas taking over from buttons and dials for the air conditioning and multimedia functions.

Updated driver-assistance system can take over from 0-210km/h by relying on the adaptive cruise control for longitudinal guidance and the lane-assist system for lateral guidance.

As with the 2021 Tiguan, expect prices to rise compared with the current Allspace, which is priced between $40,990 and $54,690 plus on-road costs.
