The Finer Details

The 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan eHybrid and Tayron eHybrid SUVs will be offered in Elegance and R-Line grades and are positioned above their equivalent petrol-powered variants in the local line-up and will rival medium plug-in SUVs like the BYD Sealion 6 and Kia Sorento PHEV.

Both use Volkswagen’s latest PHEV powertrain, combining a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with either a 150kW (Elegance) or 200kW (R-Line) e-motor, and a 19.7kWh battery.

Volkswagen claims an electric-only driving range of between 113-117km, with combined fuel consumption rated at 1.6 to 1.8 litres per 100km, depending on the variant.

Charging capabilities include 11kW AC charging and DC fast charging up to 40kW.

Optional equipment across the range includes metallic ($800) and premium metallic paint ($1100) finishes, panoramic sunroof ($2100) options, Black Style packages ($1500) for R-Line variants and a Sound & Vision package ($4200) for Tayron Elegance grades.

The Tiguan eHybrid remains Volkswagen’s core mid-size SUV and is offered as a five-seat model with a luggage capacity of 490 litres, while you can think of the Tayron eHybrid as its larger sibling, offering increased cabin space and a 705L boot.

Volkswagen’s head of product Arjun Nidigallu said the models marked a key step in the brand’s electrification strategy.

“These SUVs bring meaningful electric range, fast and flexible charging and the everyday usability our customers expect,” Nidigallu said.

Volkswagen Australia says customer orders for the Tiguan eHybrid and Tayron eHybrid will open soon, with both models scheduled to reach local showrooms in the second quarter of 2026.
