Volkswagen will introduce plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions of the new Tiguan and Tayron SUVs to its Australian line-up, joining the German brand’s electrified SUV range which includes the ID.4 and ID.5 battery electric SUVs.
Volkswagen Australia has confirmed the long-anticipated arrival of plug-in hybrid versions of its mid-size SUVs at a media event this week.
The move follows the launch of the new-generation Tiguan, currently petrol-only, and the Tayron seven-seater, which has replaced the Tiguan Allspace.
At present, the 340kW Touareg R remains the sole Volkswagen model in Australia offered with a PHEV system.
The plug-in SUV range is tipped to arrive with a price point of around $60,000, a deliberate move according to the brand, as that $60k price point proved the sweet spot for the brand’s volume selling 150TSI models as well as the price of the outgoing Tiguan 162 TSI R-Line, which remained the best-selling variant even after a decade on sale.
Volkswagen Australia Passenger Vehicles head of product, Arjun Nidigallu, said the brand believes the time is right to roll out more PHEVs in Australia.
“We will not be positioning this plug-in hybrid as we’ve done in the Touareg, which is the flagship leader of the pack, but we are looking at multiple grades in both Tiguan and Tayron.
“The power grades that have been made available to us have total output of 150kW as well as 200kW,” he said, confirming that the PHEV powertrain will be across both Elegance and R-Line trim levels.
The Tiguan and Tayron PHEVs will arrive in local showrooms in early 2026, with final specifications, full pricing and variant line-ups to be announced closer to launch.
Volkswagen says the addition of plug-in hybrids will allow it to cover more of the SUV market than ever before, offering Australian buyers the choice of internal-combustion, PHEV and EV drivetrains in the hotly contested family SUV segment.
