Volkswagen Australia has announced an incoming Monochrome Edition for its Volkswagen Tiguan five-seat mid-size SUV and the longer-wheelbase seven-seat Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace.
Due in showrooms from January next year, Aussie customers will be able to place an order for the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan Monochrome Edition, or its Allspace equivalent, from September.
Pricing starts at $53,390 plus on-road costs for the Tiguan Monochrome Edition, with the Allspace Monochrome available from $55,690 plus ORCs.
The special-edition models will join the Volkswagen T-Roc R and Tiguan R Grid Editions – also announced today (see separate story) – as part of the German brand’s wider plan to get more new vehicles on the ground in Australia, improving supply amid the global semi-conductor shortage.
Created along similar lines to the Volkswagen Touareg Monochrome concept released in 2018, as the name suggests the Tiguan Monochrome Editions will bring a range of black and white design cues.
They’ll also shave up to $4100 off the price of the corresponding permanent 162TSI R-Line models on which they’re based, due to reduced levels of equipment.
On that point, buyers will miss out on leather-upholstered seats with heating up front (and rear outboard heated seats for Allspace), electric seat adjustment, the 9.2-inch Discover Pro central touch-screen, heat treatment for the steering wheel and premium LED tail-lights.
Volkswagen says an electric tailgate and key safety systems such as side assist and rear cross traffic assist have also been removed on the special-edition models, in line with all MY23 Volkswagen Tiguan and Tiguan Allspace models that have been downgraded as a result of the computer chip crisis.
Highlights of the Tiguan and Tiguan Allspace Monochrome Edition include 19-inch Valencia gloss black alloy wheels, a black exterior styling package, dark tinted rear windows and, inside, ArtVelour and cloth R-Line seats.
There are four exterior colour options available – in the monochrome tones of black, grey, silver and Oryx White. All but the latter is included in the price, with the white pearlescent using a “three-coat system” that attracts a $900 premium.
A panoramic glass sunroof is also a $2100 option.
There’s no change to the 162TSI powertrain, which denotes a 162kW (and 350Nm) 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that combines with a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission and 4Motion all-wheel drive.
