Volkswagen has culled its Tiguan medium SUV line-up to coincide with the Australian arrival of the more spacious seven-seat Tiguan Allspace.
From October, there will be two full-time members of the popular five-seat Volkswagen Tiguan range along with a Wolfsburg Edition special.
That compares with seven models in the current Tiguan line-up.
Gone from the range are the Trendline entry-level trim, front-wheel drive and both turbo-diesel engine choices.
The 110TSI turbo-petrol engine is also temporarily dropped from the range. It will return after it achieves compliance with Europe’s tough new WLTP real-world emissions testing.
Where the Tiguan line-up previously started with the 110TSI Trendline front-drive manual at $31,990, it now kicks off with the $42,490 132TSI Comfortline 4MOTION DSG.
The other full-time model is the $49,490 162TSI Highline. Both climb $500 compared to the equivalent MY18s, which are the top-sellers in the range.
The MY19 Tiguan is the first Volkswagen medium SUV to get the Wolfsburg Edition moniker. It is based on the 162TSI Highline and costs $55,490 plus on-road costs.
The range restructure will clearly drive Volkswagen SUV buyers toward the new long-wheelbase Tiguan Allspace range, which is now on sale.
Pricing for the seven-seat Tiguan starts at $40,490 for the Comfortline 110TSI and climbs through the $45,490 Comfortline 132TSI, $46,990 Comfortline 110TDI, $52,990 Highline 162TSI and $54,490 Highline 140TDI.
We’ve detailed the Allspace’s equipment and pricing details here. We’ve driven it extensively overseas, briefly here and will publish a first local drive review on Friday.
New equipment for the MY19 Tiguan Comfortline five-seater includes dynamic headlights, 18-inch alloys (up from 17s), keyless access and start, power folding mirrors and a power tailgate.
For 2019, the Highline swaps 18-inch alloys for 19s, adds adaptive cruise control and adaptive chassis control, side assist with rear traffic alert, emergency assist and traffic jam assist.
The Wolfsburg Edition includes as standard the $3000 Sound & Vision and $2900 R-Line option packages (pictured), unique black exterior trim enhancements, 20-inch alloys, 90 per cent rear window tint and a head-up display.
