Volkswagen's Scirocco blows into town

A new sports coupe will revive an older, revered model name

It never made it to Australia, but Volkswagen's original Scirocco was a highly regarded small sports coupe running the mechanicals from the Golf GTi.

Volkswagen has previously announced that the name would be revived once more, for a new coupe based on the Eos convertible platform.

Now, the jet-setting spy snappers at Carparazzi have caught the new Scirocco in Death Valley, California. The car was heavily disguised, but much of the flamboyant styling of the IROC concept car (pictured, more here) -- the basis for the Scirocco's design -- appears to have been carried over for the production model.

Volkswagen has said, according to Carparazzi, that the Scirocco will not be released in America, but the car's presence in the Californian desert suggests otherwise.

Scirocco is named after a wind and is also remembered in the 'Australian Crawl' song 'Errol' as the name of Errol Flynn's yacht.

If the Scirocco is a go for America -- and given Volkswagen's ambitious plans for Australian sales growth -- the Scirocco may reach the antipodes also.
