Volvo buys up Polestar

Scandi car-maker snaps up respected tuner, high-performance hybrids on way

Volvo has announced that it has now taken full control of fellow Swedish. Gothenburg-based tuner, Polestar, following a deal for an undisclosed amount.

Polestar, follows in the tyre tracks of respected tuner, AMG, that also began life as an independent company that was swallowed up by the manufacturer it collaborated with.

Polestar has joined forces with Volvo in the past to create both race cars and high-performance production vehicles like the S60 and V60 wagon Polestar.

Following the new deal Volvo now wants to up production of Polestar-badged vehicles to 1500 cars a year.

Speaking following the merger, Volvo announced that its long-term goal was to produce a new generation of hybrid sports cars.

“Polestar will also in future utilise Volvo’s twin-engine electrification technology to develop next-generation performance cars,” the firm announced after the deal statement.

First hybrid to get the Polestar treatment is the XC90 that’s expected to harness the triple-charged 336kW 2.0-litre four cylinder.

Polestar is also expected to significantly re-work the XC90’s chassis to improve handling and boost grip.

Speaking to motoring.com.au back in February, Volvo marketing and communications boss, Oliver Peagam said a Polestar XC90 would be welcomed in Australia.

Some reports following the takeover also hinted that Polestar, in the future, might also offer tuning kits to existing Volvo customers to upgrade their cars.
