Volvo has announced it will equip its 60- and 90-series models with a new synthetic fibre-based ionisation filter technology that removes harmful particulates from the cabin.
Dubbed Volvo Advanced Air Cleaner, the new climate control system has sensors that measure particulates in the cabin and is claimed to be capable of scrubbing the air of 95 per cent of the most harmful 'PM 2.5 particles'.
These particles are linked to adverse short-term health effects including eye, nose, throat and lung irritations, and can lead to coughing, sneezing and even shortness of breath.
Volvo says that with the new technology on board, owners can schedule a cabin air clean ahead of their journey using their Volvo On Call app.
As well as purifying the cabin, Volvo says it has already reduced emissions of odours from its own parts and materials used in the cabin by establishing strict requirements for its suppliers.
A special team of assessors, known as 'Noses', also checks every new model during its development to detect any unwanted odour emissions, ensuring a new Volvo starts with the cleanest possible environment when it is launched.
Volvo has yet to confirm when the new tech will arrive in models sold Down Under.
