Volvo shows off R-rated XC60

Swedish carmaker unveils an option pack that boosts the visual appeal of its elaborately sculpted XC60 mid-size SUV

We have to admit Volvo's XC60 (more here) certainly represented a step in the right direction for the marque from a stylistic viewpoint when it launched here in February, taking the fight to the BMW X3 and Audi Q5.

Not content to rest on its laurels, the Swedish safety-focused brand is now on the verge of upping the ante in the visual stakes via a new R-Design option pack that will be revealed to the public at September's Frankfurt motor show.

Apart from a range of cosmetic tweaks, the XC60 R-Design gains firmer suspension settings and more direct steering, helping Volvo target buyers seeking a more sporty and agile offering, according to Lennart Stegland, president of Volvo Special Vehicles.

External visual differentiators include chrome tailpipes and a unique door mirror housings, trim mouldings and decor trim in matte silk metal finish. The vehicle's stance also benefits from five-spoke, 18-inch Cratus aluminium wheels, but XXL 20-inchers will also be available as an extra-cost option with the R-Design pack.

Another new feature is that the lower section of the car is now colour-matched to the rest of the body on the XC60 R-Design, instead of the matte black finish of the standard model. This is meant to create the impression of a lower-slung vehicle, even though actual ground clearance remains unchanged.

Volvo claims the R-Design chassis is stiffer, features stronger damping and has more distinct driving properties, yet manages all this without impacting too much on ride comfort.

What's more, says Volvo, the fact that the chassis has not been lowered ensures that the XC60 R-Design maintains its ground clearance for unimpaired off-road capability.

The new, more direct steering gear makes for faster steering response, and the company claims this gives the driver the confidence to push the car to its limits and "fully enjoy its sporty capabilities".

Inside, there's a distinctly metallic theme, with aluminium inserts in the steering wheel, door mouldings and the iconic centre stack. The sports pedals are made of brushed aluminium, but feature rubber inserts for better grip and feel.

The dark centre stack is complemented by sculpted two-tone seats that are available in the choice of two colour combinations, with light beige or dark black as the main theme, while the sports steering wheel is trimmed with perforated leather and features an engraved R-Design emblem.
