Hot on the tail of its sedan counterpart, the all-new S60, Volvo has this week launched its same-sized wagon variant, V60, in Australia.
The new model arrives in local showrooms priced from $54,950. Undercutting similarly specified vehicles from Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, Volvo V60's aggressive pricing strategy is certain to give it a leg-up where local sales are concerned.
Initially powered by a choice of either two petrol engines or one diesel, the V60 line-up broadly mirrors that of its sedan sibling.
At launch, petrol options include a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder (177kW/320Nm) and a 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder (224kW/440Nm), though a more fuel efficient 1.6-litre turbo four is also under consideration.
The diesel option is the 2.4-litre five-cylinder turbo (151kW/420Nm), though Volvo has said its new-generation 2.0-litre turbo could make an entrance when the V60 is face-lifted early next year.
For the T5 variant, the transmission of choice is Volvo's slick twin-clutch automated six-speeder, which was co-developed by former owners Ford and transmission specialist Getrag. Both the D5 and T6 models are equipped with a six-speed epicyclic auto box.
The V60 plug-in diesel hybrid launched at this year's Geneva motor show, which utilises Volvo's 2.4-litre diesel engine up front and a 50kW electric motor at the rear, is still a ways off.
