Volvo is set to launch an all new high performance wagon in Australia early in 2008, capitalising on the company's global reputation on and off the racetrack as a builder of fast station wagons. The new model -- called the V70 T6 AWD -- features a turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engine and is expected to sell for around $70,000.
The new V70 sports model will be the sole survivor of Volvo's mid-sized road going passenger wagon range after the latest XC70 replaces the remainder of the V70 range.
Sharing the same wagon body as the new XC70, the V70 T6 AWD is very different in detail. Stripped of the XC70's plastic body extensions with the high rider suspension lowered to road vehicle height, the new V70 sports a much sleeker profile than any Volvo wagon before it.
Although the all new V70 retains Volvo's trademark upright and spacious rear cargo section -- in direct contrast to its German rivals -- clever styling tweaks including some unusual tail light shapes and a higher side window line make the usual brick like shape of Volvo wagons far more pleasing to the eye. Wheelarches filled with 18-inch alloy wheels deliver extra attitude.
The V70 T6 AWD reflects the shift to more practical prestige vehicles in Europe. With BMW experiencing a record take-up of fold down back seats in its sporting sedans, Volvo anticipates a demand for a sleeker and sportier family wagon where owners do not have to carry a ladder to load the roof racks with sports equipment. A more spacious cabin takes care of the family taxi role.
Apart from the aggressive new looks, the V70 T6 AWD will arrive with impressive credentials, starting with 210kW and 400Nm from its twin-scroll turbocharged 3.0-litre petrol engine. Volvo's latest all wheel drive system fitted as standard will ensure that it is all useable under a wide range of conditions, leaving behind the sometimes unruly behaviour of hot Volvo wagons in the past.
Volvo's new FOUR-C adjustable suspension system will also be standard along with the Personal Car Communicator (PCC), Premium sound with six-stacker CD, front and rear park assist, speed-sensitive steering and self-opening tailgate.
Volvo's new high performance wagon is expected to go on sale before the end of March 2008.
