VW owners to protect workers

Porsche-Piech clans vow to take care of blue-collar VW workforce

The mostly reclusive Porsche-Piech families who own most of Volkswagen today told the embattled company’s workers they would do everything they could to protect their jobs.

With sales sliding and spending cut around the world in the wake of the #Dieselgate emissions-cheating scandal, the senior members of the clan addressed 20,000 Volkswagen workers at the Wolfsburg plant overnight.

“Jobs are a very valuable asset. This asset mustn’t be squandered,” the Porsche Automobil Holding SE chairman, Wolfgang Porsche, pledged.

Union and labour leaders had pleaded with the ownership group to give Volkswagen’s workforce a commitment in the lead up to an enforced two-week Christmas shut down, especially with its US sales falling 25 per cent in November.

Porsche SE holds more than 52.5 per cent of Volkswagen Group voting shares and provides four members of its supervisory board, including Mr Porsche, Louise Kiesling, Hans-Michel Piech and Ferdinand Oliver Porsche, all of whom were in Wolfsburg for the speech.
