Volkswagen has sprung a surprise with a part-car, part-motorcycle three-wheeler. The production-ready GX3 concept was driven on to its LA show stand last week – to a standing ovation from the hard-nosed motoring writers – by VW’s youthful boss, Wolfgang Bernhard.
Not unlike Peugeot’s 20 Cup concept from last year’s Frankfurt motor show – but smaller and apparently even sportier – the GX3 is powered by VW’s 92kW/152Nm 1.6-litre four and weighs in at just 570kg. VW promises 0-100km/h in 5.7 seconds and 1.25g lateral acceleration.
