Volkswagen continues to lift its once relatively pedestrian Passat higher in socio-economic classification with the arrival of the new CC model.
And the CC appellation in this case doesn't mean it's a steel-roofed coupe-convertible like the Peugeot or Renault CCs. Rather, the Passat CC is a sedan that poses as a coupe, Mercedes CLS-style, via a slickly curved roof high, narrow side windows and a side profile augmented by chunkier, wider wheel arches. The visual differences with the regular Passat four-door sedan are marked.
Sharing top-shelf billing with the hi-po R36, the upmarket Passat CC also brings a number of new technologies.
These include adaptive cruise control that automatically matches the speed of the car with the vehicle travelling ahead, Park Assist, which is able to park the VW with little intervention from the driver, Front Assist, which can avoid or minimise slow-speed nose-to-tail collisions, and Adaptive Chassis Control that can vary ride and comfort characteristics to suit the driver's mood of the moment.
The elegant new VW opens at a recommended retail of $54,990 for the 2.0-litre turbodiesel version, and closes out with the 3.6-litre petrol V6 model complete with 4Motion all-wheel drive at $65,990.
