An elaborate, in-depth teaser has been released for the upcoming 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQG, showing the electric off-roader let rip up and down the iconic Schöckl mountain in the hands of company executives and test pilots.
The 12-minute video was released on YouTube over the weekend and details key features as journalist and avid G-Wagen fan Sarah Harman goes for a shotgun ride in a pre-production version of the 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQG.
Save for a better look at its mountain-conquering capability, the video doesn’t reveal much we didn’t already know about the EQG – other than the inclusion of dynamic seats that grip occupants as the SUV negotiates technical obstacles involving wheel lifts and more severe side angles.
Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kallenius and chief engineer Fabian Schossau both make appearances to explain some of the EQG’s key features, including the already-seen G-turn function, dual-layer carbon-fibre underbelly protection, quad-motor drivetrain and outright capability.
Kallenius even goes so far as to speculate the electric G-Wagen will be the most capable G-Class yet, thanks to the instant torque delivery and the level of finesse afforded by each wheel having its own motor.
Speaking to Harman before their voyage up the mountain, Schossau said the EQC “incorporates all the characteristics that a G stands for” – iconic design and immense off-road ability.
He also referenced the quad-motor powertrain and battery protection as the two biggest challenges faced during the EQG’s development, especially in water and while bush-bashing given that lithium-ion batteries don’t typically take well to water or hard impacts.
We still don’t have a firm reveal or launch date for the EQG, but we do know the electric G-Wagen will make its global debut sometime next year ahead of a possible Australian release in 2025, pending enough local consumer demand.
