Watch Porsche's 911 GT2 RS smash new records at the Nurburgring

German sports car maker proves GT2 RS is fastest 911 of all time with new lap record of Green Hell

Porsche has once again reclaimed the prestigious lap record at the Nurburgring, thanks to its latest 911 GT2 RS, which set a blistering new benchmark of just 6:47.30 seconds

Beating the Lamborghini Huracan Performante's 6:52.01 lap, the GT2 RS was not only five seconds faster than the Lambo but an incredible 10 seconds faster than Porsche's 918 Spyder hypercar.

As well as breaking the production car record, the fastest-ever 911 also nabbed the lap record for the fastest road-legal, rear-wheel drive car.

The record lap was driven by Porsche test driver Lars Kern, who smashed Porsche's projected lap time of 7:05.00.

To prove the 6:47 time wasn't a one-off, the German car-maker said Kern and fellow test driver and racer, Nick Tandy, set five laps below the 6:50.00 threshold.

For the record, the 911 GT2 RS was driven on road-legal Michelin Pilot Cup 2 tyres for the run.

Created to be the most powerful 911 ever built, the GT2 RS is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre flat-six that generates an incredible 515kW/750Nm.

Available only with the dual-clutch PDK transmission, Porsche claims the GT2 RS can hit 100km/h in just 2.8 seconds.

Top speed, meanwhile, is 340km/h.

Weighing in at just 1470kg -- 200kg lighter than the all-wheel drive 911 Turbo and 30kg less if you add the optional Weissach pack -- the quickest ever 911 gets carbon ceramic brakes and a big aero package as standard.

In Australia, the most powerful production Porsche 911 will be priced from $645,700, while the optional Weissach package (that adds a carbon-fibre roof, carbon-fibre front and rear stab bars, and ultra-lightweight magnesium alloys) is expected to add another $65,000 to that price.

Unlike the recent 911 R special-edition, the GT2 RS will not be a limited-run car but, according to Porsche Australia, the new Nurburgring lap record holder will be only made for a limited period of time.

Technically, the 911 GT2 RS isn't the fastest production car around the Nurburgring as Chinese car-maker Nio claims its pure-electric EP9 hypercar is faster still, setting a time -- almost a year ago -- of 6:45.90.

Unfortunately, many commentators have accused the Chinese car-maker of setting that record on a set of 'specially-prepared' tyres, which goes against the spirit of the lap record battle between manufacturers.
